Substitute Teach for Fresno Unified❓

Before we leave for Anaheim, I need to file my dad’s taxes, then print out three copies of my previous semester’s vocabulary syllabi and rhetoric portfolio. I’m waking up at 7am to get this shit done, with the plan of being on the road by 9am, at my dad’s by 1pm to drop off Phoebe, then at my friend’s house to play Legacy Risk by 2pm.

Not leaving a lot of wiggle room in there, but them’s the ropes for playing ink art with Chase last night.

Since I’m starting my vocab class next week, and I’m assigning the semester portfolio to my rhetoric class after spring break, I thought I ought to incorporate planning into my weekend handwriting goals:

My Saturday writing goals (3950 words):

  • edit 6000 words of my blog (~2000-word equivalent);
  • edit previous semester’s vocabulary syllabus (~500 word equivalent);
  • handwrite a poem (100-word equivalent);
  • handwrite a 100-word vocabulary class plan;
  • handwrite a 100-word rhetoric class plan;
  • handwrite 100-word gratitude;
  • handwrite 100-word plans for the next day;
  • handwrite a 250-word review of a board game;
  • handwrite a 250-word review of another board game;
  • handwrite a 250-word review of a third board game (hey, board game day doesn’t happen very often in my life anymore!);

I’ll definitely need to charge my 🤪-battery iPhone 6S for pictures, then bring a journal for these reviews; and I’ll need the stationary for my gratitudes and next-day plans, too;

On Sunday (4100 words):

  • edit 6000 words of my novella (~2000 word equivalent);
  • edit previous semester’s vocabulary syllabus (~500 word equivalent);
  • handwrite a 2000-word short story;
  • handwrite a 100-word reflection about handwriting short stories;
  • handwrite a poem (100-word equivalent);
  • handwrite a 100-word vocabulary class plan;
  • handwrite a 100-word rhetoric class plan;
  • handwrite 100-word gratitude;
  • handwrite 100-word plans for the next day.

We’re also going out for lunch with my dad on Sunday, as an extended celebration to Chase’s birthday. Yesterday,March 16th is Chase’s birthday. we had Ethiopian for dinner; we also shopped for art supplies at Allard’s. Then we spent the evening playing with those supplies.

In My Life Today 💖 How about Substitute Teaching? 💕

I haven’t been able to figure out how to respond to Fresno Unified.

I know I don’t want to work as a 3.5-hour/week aide at McLane High anymore, because the interview experience was sour, and now the social atmosphere feels too difficult to navigate; but if I could work as a 3.5-hour/week aide at a different high school—or better yet, substitute teachSince I was once a SPED teacher, I know how difficult it can be to find a good substitute for special education classrooms. I’d happily scoop up the SPED middle school and high school substitute teacher requests, so I could provide a safe and friendly atmosphere for students again, if only for a day.—that could give me the opportunity to bring in a little more money, while still pursuing my writing goals.

Frankly, Chase and I need the money. And I’d like the money. I want to try this Calm app on my iPad for my social anxiety and depression, but it’s $59.99/year after the trial weekI’m turning on the trial week during spring break, so I can maximize my onboarding time before I decide on shelling out money..

I want to make money by supporting communities: grant writing, teaching, or telling stories I wish someone would tell me. At this point, substitute teaching feels the most ideal way Fresno Unified fits into this, since I could then maintain the schedule:

  • Monday: self-care during the day; prepare curriculum at night
  • Tuesday: write during the day; teach at College of the Sequoias at night
  • Wednesday: write during the day; teach at Fresno City College at night
  • Thursday: write during the day; fine art at night
  • Friday*: substitute teach during the day; spend time with family or friends at night
  • Saturday*: write during the day; spend time with family or friends at night
  • Sunday*: self-care during the day; write at night

*with the exception of once every 6 weeks, when I drive to Orange County to see my family and friends, and once every 4 weeks, when I spend time wedding planning.

As I was deciding this in the bathtub,—with my phone muted, as I always do for bath bomb time—Fresno Unified called to schedule another ADA meeting for March 22nd at 1:30pm. Next Thursday. What a relief. It’s much easier to talk to someone in person than to leave messages with human resource voicemails.

I know my therapist advised I treat my employers like relationships. But since Fresno Unified is such a juggernaut, I think it’s safe to treat other school sites as other opportunities to contribute to the K-12 community. And subbing is a safe enough commitment that I can contribute one day a week, still make an impact for my neighborhood and community, and remain focused on my writing goals.

It’s worth a try.

Also, Chase’s been subbing for a while now, and it’s kinda inspiring.
