Retro Review: Crimson Gem Saga

Crimson Gem Saga ScreenshotCrimson Gem Saga is a PSP game that hit America in May ’09. Despite its raving reviews and popularity, I only recently added it to my collection. It really helps the creditability of a game when it’s so popular, it was re-released for iPhone, iTouch and iPad—so why not give it a shot, right?

Man oh man, I’m glad I did!

If you’re looking for an RPG with new, nifty features, this is not the one. Crimson Gem Saga follows the traditional strengths of previous roleplaying games, including:

  • Turn-based battles that start by running into enemies on the dungeon screen
  • Standard level-ups with customizable, point-based talent trees
  • A “collect the artifacts” story, with thoroughly enjoyable plot twists
  • In-depth characters, complimented with full art and voice-over dialogue
  • A massive “bonus” dungeon available for scouring, filled with mouth-watering goodies

Crimson Gem SagaI can name dozens of games that meet the same quota. So why’s Crimson Gem Saga any different?

Because every aforementioned aspect is executed flawlessly. The developers took qualities we’ve all grown to love and enjoy, polished them into something fantastic, and released a gem [saga! haha!] to the masses.

If you like memorable characters, this seems like the game’s strongest quality. The interactions are hilarious, the voice actors do a fabulous job, and I can’t help but relate them to other characters I’ve adored. Even if you hardly pick up your PSP—you’re more of a Dungeons and Dragons or World of Warcraft kind of gamer—it’s impossible not to appreciate the personality archetypes each character brings to the table.

Crimson Gem Saga is also unique in its origination. While most of these classic RPGs originate in Japan, this is straight from IRONNOS in South Korea. It was first published as Astonishia Story 2 (for those that’ve played the American Astonishia Story), but when the Atlus worked their magic and brought it to the US, that’s when it was renamed Crimson Gem Saga. In Japan, it was released as Garnet Chronicle.

The only complaint is the music. Crimson Gem Saga isn’t lacking in musical composition, but it’s not the kind that sticks with you, like Chrono Crusade or Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. Even then though, the sound effects are thumbs up. You’ll hardly notice the soundtrack’s lackluster place in the background.

This game’s so thoroughly enjoyable—a perfected, cliche RPG—that I intend to pick it up on my iPad next. And how many games are worth owning multiple copies? Surely you can afford at least one.

WoW Review: Best of World of Warcraft Comics

Funny WoW Comics

Get your /lols on!

Please bear in mind this is from March 2011.

The World of Warcraft community is abundant with /silly. A couple weeks back, I took a look at the most entertaining WoW videos on the interwebs. Now let’s take it from a different angle and check out what comic artists have to offer!

Seven Comics for Weekly Reading

Some of these comics are updated more than once a week, and some of them have come to a close. Titles can be deceiving. They’re mostly weekly and fresh though, and they’re all worth a click-and-peek!

  1. Looking for Group – This one also appeals to our D&D group, but I clearly see the WoW parallel. As a bonus, here’s an LFG video.
  2. Daily Quests
  3. WoW Eh?
  4. Heroes of WoW
  5. Teh Gladiators
  6. Dark Legacy Comics
  7. Torment of the Week

Five Hilarious Flowcharts

If you’re not wanting to get invested into a weekly comic strip, here are some quickie flowcharts worth visiting:

  1. Can I Has Healz Flochart – Check out I Like Bubbles Flowchart Fridays if this gave you a giggle!
  2. Simplified Cat Raid DPS Flowchart
  3. Smite Priest 3v3 Flowchart – I can’t help myself here. Back in the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King days, I was a smite priest blogger of some notoriety! If you’ve ever arena’d as a disc priest, this will probably fill you with the giggle-bubbles.
  4. PvP Will I Win Flowchart – Speaking of 3v3s.
  5. Should I Have a Cookie? – Not a WoW flowchart, but I’ve yet to meet a World of Warcraft player that didn’t enjoy it.

As a bonus, here’s an “inspirational” comic on why not to play WoW and a random giggle, For the Birds. If you’re looking for more, Blizz also has a collection of comics from fans. My personal favorite is the OOMkin. There’s also the comic list on WoWwiki.

Retro Review: Lunar, Silver Star Harmony

Lunar Silver Star HarmonyThere are half a dozen Lunar titles out there, from the original Sega CD Silver Star Story, to versions for the Playstation, GBA and Nintendo DS. The latest release, however—the PSP’s Lunar: Silver Star Harmony—holds the trump card for story and graphics.

Graphics and Sound

Return to the original storyline of Lunar: Silver Star Story, with a new prologue and side stories for the Four Heroes and Vile Tribe. Graphics are updated to stand on par with Crimson Gem Saga and Mimana: Iyar Chronicle, delivering a colorful world that’s attractive to old school and new players alike.

While the graphics are not on the cutting edge of technology, the sprite-based world matches the upbeat, happy-go-lucky music that defines the Lunar genre. Couple this with lovable characters and excellent dialogue, and you have an RPG that’s best in its class.

Characters and Story

The Lunar series hails its success in humorous characters and intriguing plots. The stories are engaging, the characters are memorable, and the love stories are unmatched. And even though I’ve stressed the uplifting theme in the series, there’s a serious side to Lunar: Silver Star Harmony that’ll keep you on your toes.

As an added bonus, I’ve never gone long without laughing at dialogue hidden in an unsuspecting villager or bookshelf. Exploring every crevice of the Lunar: Silver Star Harmony world only enhances the lighthearted experience.

Lunar PSPThe Battle System

The battle system isn’t the most challenging thing in the world, although there’s a unique approach to character movement, and gauges for special maneuvers. Character voiceovers in the battles are also top-notch, just as high of quality as the animation sequences.

Bosses never make it to the realm of multiple-attempts-difficult, but there are some with strategies that are obvious in their stances or coloration.

Don’t expect breaking a sweat. But don’t think you’ll get bored, either.

The Verdict

Whether you’re a newcomer to the Lunar series, or you’re revisiting a beloved and treasured world, there’s something to be said for Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. If you’re after a classic RPG, remade from the ground up, fire on your PSP and give this new Lunar a try!

Retro Review: Etrian Odyssey Saga

The Etrian Odyssey saga is one of those timeless classics that fits every gamer possible. Whether you’re a Nintendo DS veteran, or you’re just getting into handheld gaming, this series has everything you could ask for. We’re talking some seriously addictive dungeon crawling, competitive hack-and-slash, and characters that you make from scratch.

Etrian Odyssey ScreenshotBut the best part? You get to draw maps.

Each of the three games starts with the creation of your guild, including registering adventurers of different, customizable classes. Think of Final Fantasy Tactics titles, but with a single, point-based level-up system, like Growlanser or World of Warcraft.

Once registered, you’ll move into the stratums; labyrinth-style dungeons that you have to chart out yourself. Key missions and side quests move the story along, starting with the task of mapping out the first floor.

There are different classes and locations in all three games, making them a unique experience without abandoning the gaming style. While the classes follow the basics of other games, they have a flavor all their own:

  • Etrian Odyssey comes with the classes Landsknect (sword or axe fighter), Survivalist, Protector, Dark Hunter, Medic, Alchemist, Ronin, Hexer and Troubadour—and as much as I poke fun at bards in Dungeons and Dragons, the Etrian Odyssey troubadour is the best!
  • Etrian Odyssey 2 let’s you play the same classes, but also introduces the War Magus, Gunner and adorable Beast.
  • Etrian Odyssey 3 is in a port city, and sports the classes Prince/Princess, Gladiator, Hoplite, Buccaneer, Ninja, Monk, Zodiac, Wildling, Arbalist and Farmer. Depending on the ending you’re working towards, you can also unlock three additional classes.

Each class has multiple specialties, entirely reliant on the skills you choose for them. (Sound familiar?) To increase playability, you have the option of taking level losses and moving skills, or retiring a character entirely, so they may tutelage a new recruit with more potential.

So it’s time to convince you:

  • If you’re a fan of console RPGs, this game’s challenge factor is thumbs up. You’ll love the customization of your characters, quests and maps.
  • If you play Dungeons and Dragons, this will feel familiar. You’re creating a character and going on an adventure—just like any other campaign.
  • If you’re a WoW kind of gamer, the addictive factor of character creation and leveling is unmatched. Every time an Etrian Odyssey game lands in my DS, it peels me away like concrete-grade adhesive.
  • If you play Magic: the Gathering, you’re going to love combining classes and abilities to build the perfect strategy. Not to mention pimping your deck with Etrian Odyssey sleeves.
  • All three Etrian Odyssey games sell used at most stores for under $20, and you can play them in any order.

Regardless of what brings you to this game, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll get hooked. Just when you think you’ve got the game’s features figured out, the plot will twist and wrench out of control. The music’s just stellar, especially the battle themes. And there’s just the right amount of combat, mystery and exploration—from the first stratum, to the secret tunnels and doors.

WoW Review: Best of World of Warcraft on YouTube

Funny WoW VideosPlease bear in mind this is March 2011.

Before you adventure into the dangers of Azeroth, why not kick back and watch the funniest World of Warcraft videos out there? These funny WoW videos are five minutes or less, so they’re perfect for your break at work or in raid.

If you enjoy a certain video specifically, make sure to check out the other productions by the same artist or group!

  1. Don’t Make Me Get My Main by CraniusPresents. Winner at BlizzCon 2009.
  2. Hard Like Heroic by Madcow. Based in Burning Crusade, but with the revival of some challenge in heroics, it works for Cataclysm too.
  3. Frame of Mind by Sedrin. Absolutely amazing. Even though it’s rooted in Burning Crusade days, it really belongs on this list.
  4. Who’s the Tank? by Broncotv.
  5. The Craft of War: BLIND by Percula. This one isn’t really a funny WoW video, but it’s still well worth the watch. Makes most people gawk.
  6. Dude, What’s My Class? by RedEyeLobine. I’m sad the second one of this hasn’t, and probably never will, come out. XD
  7. Nerf You by Madcow.
  8. I Am Murloc by Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftan. This is great introductory video for L70ETC if you haven’t seen them before.
  9. The Ballad of the Sex Junkie [WoW Music Video]. In French with subtitles.
  10. Dranei Tunak by AmanadaJ3162. The humor really comes from seeing the original Tunak Tunak Tun.
  11. Code Monkey by Spiffworld. It’s meant for programmers, but it’s awesomeness for all.
  12. Do You Want to Date My Avatar from The Guild. I put it at the bottom because you should’ve seen it already. Actually, just go watch all the episodes from The Guild when you’re done here.

Also, here are some additional videos for the Wrath of Lich King and Burning Crusade veterans:

  1. Ulduar by Madcow.
  2. You FACE Jaraxxus remix by MrVoletron. Only sound, but it’s always brought me laughs. I was actually introduced to these remixes while making fun of Jaraxxus in Vent.
  3. Ni Hao (A Gold Farmers Story) by Madcow. With Shadowmoon Valley!

And lastly, the classics from vanilla:

  1. Leeroy Jenkins by pf007101. While this is a classic that all WoW players should’ve seen by now, its roots are in vanilla.
  2. Onyxia Wipe Animation by Alachas1985. If you enjoyed this, MrVoletron’s remix is pretty hilarious.
  3. Big Blue Dress by CraniusPresents. Best for mage players, but enjoyable by all — with some seriously ancient gear!
  4. Learn 2 Play by Myndflame. This is poking fun at WoW players more than actually jesting how to play. If you enjoy this video, consider Myndflame’s ROFLBear series.

If I missed your favorite movie, leave a comment and I’ll include it in the list!
